St Albans Cricket Club Boys U11A v Shenley Village CC Under 11 on Thu 01 May 2025 at 17:30
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report In our first ever 'if you're out you're out' match, the U11s applied themselves well but just came up short against a well drilled Shenley side. Pre-match we lost a player through illness so were immediately down to 10. We went on to lose the toss and were inserted to bat. Owen and Jay opened the batting and applied themselves brilliantly, blocking good balls and looking to score from anything loose on offer from the bowlers. An opening stand of 20 is a great benchmark for the season and we'll see if we can top that as we go on. During those opening throes Sam unfortunately took a tumble on the sidelines, landing heavily on his hand, and was rushed off to urgent care (confirmed later on to have fractured a finger on his right hand - we all wish you a speedy recovery!). The loss of Jay brought Neerav to the crease, and he looked comfortable for a short while, picking the gaps with ease. At 36/1 St Albans looked poised to post a solid score. Unfortunately in a tale as old as time, St Albans' middle and lower order collapsed much like a poorly erected house of cards, and the final 7 wickets were lost for 18 runs, leaving St Albans all out for 54. Lower order highlights included excellent shots from many of the batters, with 4s for Aston, Owen and William (and a nice red-inker for William) - there were some unlucky dismissals, particularly for Henry and Thomas who unfortunately faced great balls first up. As Shenley padded up, the virtues of bowling straight were extolled - it was pointed out that Shenley had taken 6 wickets through clean bowling our batters, and that they only bowled 4 wides in the innings. This advice was clearly heeded, as Neerav bowled Shenley's opener with the first delivery of the innings - hope sprung afresh! A second wicket (this time for Harry) in over 2 brought new excitement to proceedings, but sadly it was not to be and Shenley looked relatively untroubled as they knocked off the runs, ending 3 down. The St Albans fielders and bowlers never lost heart, and stuck to their task well - unlucky not to pick up a few more wickets. A match played in good spirit throughout, with many positives to take going forward.
