Eversholt II v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 30 Aug 2014 at 1:00 pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report On this late season visit to picturesque Eversholt, the IIIs were beaten by a superior opposition, who out performed Saints in all disciplines.

With the achievement of maximum points the day's realistic target, Walker elected to bat first after winning the toss, somewhat bound to do so by the League's bonus point structure, in spite of conditions that looked good for bowling.

Nissar and Ashton set about their work admirably, against bowling that was disciplined. The surface and overhead clouds made for a testing time, and the score moved slowly - guests arriving at the adjacent hall for a wedding were not likely to find their attention taken by the cricket. In the 16th over, Nissar's patience was undone, and the first wicket fell with the score on just 18. Ferguson and Ashton worked hard to add 35, but then four wickets were lost for just a single run, numbers 4, 5 and 6 failing to contribute a single run between them. Warren, at 7, top scored with 30, and Thompson fought hard to be last man out.

Eversholt fielded well, and their four bowlers - for that was all they had available - bowled with commendable accuracy on a helpful wicket, Singleton nabbing 5/32. But an all out score of 110, achieved in more than 50 overs, was not the result Saints wanted: 30 runs short of first batting points, and unlikely to threaten the promotion-ready home side.

A good start was needed with the ball; unfortunately a wayward first over gifted easy runs but yielded a lucky wicket. In contrast to our own start, after four overs 28 runs were on the board and Eversholt were well on the way. Perhaps in frustration, the fielding effort was sloppy - the most disappointing seen all year. Button and Walker regained a little control, but the game was effectively up before the bowling-heavy line up could be used to good advantage.

Eversholt comfortably home then, with a 7 wicket win, having made the track that looked so difficult when we batted on it look like a road. The 3 wickets claimed meant just 3 bonus points achieved on the day, far shy of a desirable 10. Relegation, though not confirmed, seems imminent with just one round of matches remaining.
