Berkhamsted II v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 16 Jul 2016 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 14 runs
Match report
Saints IIIs travelled to top of the table Berkhamsted and participated in an enthralling match that went to the wire.
The usual week to week team changes in the XI left some uncertainty about the outcome but skipper Telkman called accurately and sagely chose to bat first. Optimising bonus point opportunities was paramount but at the back of the mind a recognition the opposition’s weakness was with the bat.
The deck looked a good one and played true. An early swipe from Shah was signalled out to the delight of the fielding side, but to the chagrin of the batsman. Murray was already enjoying the true wicket and he and Ralfe Sr. set about their task calmly. However Ralfe knocked one to cover and a brace of wickets followed, putting the locals in command.
Murray departed for a decent 39, bringing Dean and Parkinson together. These two complemented each other, Parkinson’s patience the perfect foil for Dean who increased the scoring rate. With all their actions, Berkhamsted looked keen to prove their credentials - 8 wins from 10 - but struggled to adapt as the partnership grew to 67. At 155-6 perhaps things might have kicked on further but a final 53 over tally of 179-8 was decent, he calamitous collapses of previous weeks avoided. Dean the star of the show for St Albans with his well made 73.
There was a feeling that 180 represented a comfortable target at the Berkhamsted Bowl. Undoubtedly a bowler short, Telkman would need to manage his options with care too. The first over saw a trio of straight boundaries, echoes of the demolition of the round 2 encounter. But next over the skipper seduced Debonnairre into a mishit and Ralfe Jr did the rest. Dean added two more wickets, showing what a valuable player he is, and shortly Berko were 44-4.
Again, the game recalibrated, with a more determined partnership moving the score to 67 after 21 overs, when Walker’s introduction lead to a pair of wickets. After a well earned drinks break, Berkhamsted resumed with a clear plan to attack the bowling, but a swift stumping by Ralfe Sr, and then a second steepling catch by Ralfe Jr put Saints ahead.
Two adjacent games had finished by this time and attention was now focussed on the action on the main ground, a good crowd at the Pavilion backing the Berkhamsted lads. And credit to them, they showed their belief with continued fight (reflected with an unusual scorecard with ten batsmen in double figures but a top score of just 30). Another hat trick of straight boundaries had Saints edgy, but the returning Dean offered the perfect reply to knock over middle stump: 145-9. Still the runs ticked over, both sides pushing for a win rather than settling for a draw. Finally, Telkman trapped Wright in front, and Saints had a 14 run win.
Walker nabbed four wickets, and Telkman and man-of-the-match Dean three each; the bowlers all toiled hard and kept to their disciplines. The catching and fielding efforts were laudable.
This outstanding result means that although sitting 5th on the table, Saints have defeated the top three on the ladder. Performances like this should see this improve. Well done team.
