Bushey III v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 02 Sep 2017 at 12:30
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report Catches win matches and when you put down five (count ‘em!) off the same player who goes on to hit the winning runs, it’s unlikely you will prevail.

On arrival the sight of a tired, late season pitch, criss-crossed with football pitch markings in readiness for Autumn suggested bowling first would be the best option but of course skipper Andy Saunders lost the toss and Saints padded up to bat.

The initial going was slow with Bushey bowling tight lines at openers Kevin Ralfe and Steve Ferguson before Kev was trapped on LBW for just 1. Cue a fuming Kev stomping off the pitch and booting an innocent cricket ball with such ferocity it provoked stifled giggling fits from his team mates.

Fergie was patient but departed on 8, caught trying to loft the ball over mid-off. With that loss came the steadying influence of Najib Khan to the crease. A model of consistency all season he set about building an innings of 35, which on a tricky pitch was a very decent effort. He was briefly joined by Wilf Ralf who left on a golden duck and then Moksy Islam who smashed 15 before being replaced by Michael Martin who couldn’t get away this week and departed cheaply.

A late 7th wicket stand of almost 50 from Glenn O’Grady – an aggressive 33- and Pete Melling – a patient 17 took the score up to 140 after 40 overs, which looked vaguely competitive.

The Bushey openers started well after tea, taking a liking to the pace of Christian Hay and quickly built momentum. From the other end Glenn O’Grady kept it tight and his patience eventually secured the first breakthrough as the first of the opposition openers was caught off his bowling for 15.

To the crease to replace him came Das, a youngster well known to Saints from the reverse fixture for his Teflon like ability to avoid dismissal.

Michael Martin and Tim Winfield both snagged a wicket apiece during great spells, with the help of Kevin Ralfe who was superb behind the stumps, taking two brilliant stumpings in his excellent all round performance.

The belligerent Chiliveru then came to the crease and set about the bowling with relish, taking a particular liking to the slow left arm of Saunders who eventually bowled him after one attempted hoik too many. A further two wickets fell to Saunders in quick succession including an impressive caught and bowled and another Kev stumping and suddenly the opposition looked wobbly.

All the while ‘Teflon Das’ was racking up the lives with catch after catch going down , some admittedly hard but others inexplicably easy.

Batsmen 6, 7, 8 and 9 then went for a combined total of 9 runs and the victory was on but with just 7 balls remaining Telfon Das hit the winning runs and Bushey secured the win.

A dead rubber of a game -both team were safe - played in decent spirit was a decent end to a solid season from the 4XI who secured a mid-table finish and look well set to build on this season’s efforts if they can keep a consistent set of players together next year.
