St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Northchurch II on Sat 08 Jun 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 50 runs

Match report Returning to Sandpit Lane after a second successive victory, Saints’ IIIs took on division leader, Northchurch, on Saturday afternoon.

Considerable rain over the preceding 24 hours had threatened the game, but by the scheduled commencement a strong breeze had blown the last of the rain away, and the captains agreed to a slightly reduced 37 overs a side match, allowing a little time for the wicket to dry.

The wicket - ever the focus at SLCG - was bound to do a bit with the dampness it held, but Northchurch made a solid start. A retirement, due to illness, gave Saints an opening, and Saunders held a good catch at point the following delivery to make further headway. Milnes completed a good spell of 8 overs (1/20). The visiting skipper, Randall, and Smart (35) continued to be baffled by the wicket but clung on to take the total to 62. During this period, Saints’ fieldsmen shelled a number of chances, some easier than others, rather stalling progress - Walker (8/3/11/1) perhaps the bowler who suffered most.

Fortunately Button (3/30) found a good rhythm and in turn hit the stumps three times; no need to rely on fieldsmen. From the bottom end, Mulvaney took a pair of wickets and Northchurch were 7/90 in the 32nd over. The visitors made a good finish to their innings, as the catching continued to flounder, with sensible batting and good running between wickets. A total of 127 was reached, appearing very much in reach.

With four wickets falling by the time the score reached 21, the target looked much more daunting. Hancock, with 19, briefly took the game to Northchurch. Walker - also 19 - took the aerial route when the bowlers overpitched, and in partnership with Button and Milnes the runs required reduced to more manageable levels. However in the face of some decent bowling the last three wickets fell quickly, and the game was done.

Well beaten by a better team on the day, Saints will need to come to terms with the SLCG wicket, and deserve a long session of catching practice. Next up will be Wheathampstead, again at Sandpit Lane.
