St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v President XI on Sun 04 Aug 2019 at TBA
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 39 runs
Match report
The St Albans Cricket Club’s 125th Anniversary weekend came to a fitting climax with our annual Presidents Day fixture at Clarence Park , featuring a St Albans Club XI against Peter Mardle’s Presidents Invitational XI.
There were a number of somewhat bleary eyed players following the party at the pavilion on Saturday night , a fair few of whom had actually not gone home opting instead to sleep at the club, but after a couple of ‘stiffeners’ to alleviate the hangovers the 12 noon start was, remarkably, achieved with the President’s XI opting to bat first.
1XI skipper Max Capaldi and stylish 1XI regular Sandipan Chanda opened and, obviously still drunkm, The St Albans Club XI captain Jimmy Rosson decided to start with a 7 man slip cordon to the bemusement of bowler Moksy Islam.
This did however seem to sow seeds of doubt in the batsmen’s heads and with Moksy bowling tight lines partnered by fellow quickie Ben Adshead at the other end there was little to feed off before Chanda predictably edged one only for Dom Watkins , perhaps the most fragile of the ‘sleepover gang’, to take it full on the knee at 6th slip rather than catch it.
A switch to orthodox field settings saw the game settle into a more conventional pattern of play with both Capaldi and Chanda settling in and knocking the ball around nicely particularly off the bowling of the sunburnt and hungover Jamie Telkman who endured a torrid time both with the ball and in the field much to the amusement of all present.
Capaldi and Chanda eventually retired on 54 and 57 respectively to bring Toby Crisp and Matty Ingham to the crease. The somewhat rusty Crisp , whose family responsibilities have kept him away from regular cricket in recent seasons, was the first of Dan Rosson’s three victims while Ingham scored a stylish 32 before being clean bowled by Jimmy Rosson.
Wickets then fell at regular intervals with Adam Hounslow , Amit Rajani and Andy Saunders all claiming scalps despite a succession of umpires who seemed not to understand the LBW law.
The President’s XI finished on a daunting 241 after their 48 overs and the traditional sit down lunch in the Long Room was taken with a fine spread provided by Julie and her team and speeches by our venerable Life President. Much wine was also imbibed .
After the unveiling of ‘The Peter Mardle Scorebox’ , the second innings commenced with The St Albans Club XI looking to chase down the target with Adam ‘Hammer’ Hounslow and, perhaps surprisingly, Dan Rosson as the opening pair. Rosson Jnr lasted but a few balls before being clean bowled by off spinner for the day Jacob Roache for a duck.
2XI skipper Amit Rajani came to the crease and put in a typically gritty performance before Jacob Winfield, who toiled hard in his 10 over spell had him caught by Ben Ramsey, for a hard fought 24. Winfield also clean bowled Hammer, which bought Jonny Hall to the middle and it was his swashbuckling 74* , made despite some fearsome sledging from his 1XI skipper (mainly focused on his new bat choice), which kept the teams hopes alive.
Moksy Islam smashed a carefree 26 before holing out and Jamie Telkman redeemed himself somewhat with a useful 15 but Ramsey (3-17) and Capaldi (3-4) decimated the tail to end any ambitions of an upset.
The Presidents Trophy was presented therefore to victorious skipper Guy Black and the by now exhausted teams retired to the bar to reflect on a really fantastic weekend , which it has already been decided, will become a regular fixture in the club calendar.
