Pinner 2XI v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 01 Jul 2023 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 38 runs

Match report After a close fought but ultimately disappointing loss to fierce rivals Broxbourne in their last outing the 4s were hoping to get back to winning ways with a victory away at Pinner.
An overcast and humid day saw a discussion among Saint’s senior players about the merits of batting or bowling should the toss be won. It was decided that with a bowling heavy lineup the conditions should be embraced with the hope that the ball might “do something” in the early stages. With skipper Saunders duly emerging victorious after calling heads that plan was set in motion and the 11 men of St Albans took the field.
As they have done all season Ashish Dean and Tim Winfield took the new ball and bowled with skill and guile conceding just 52 runs in their joint 15 over spell, which also saw them pick up a wicket apiece.
Pinner’s watchful batting saw them reach drinks with not that many on the scoreboard but with 8 wickets in hand – a cue for them to launch a major run rate acceleration as they came out with a clear plan to attack the bowling in the second half.
Tom Banks and Sudhanshu Suryavanshi were brought onto bowl and did well as the Pinner batsmen started to play a more aggressive game with Sud bowling perhaps his best spell for the 4s without reward. Saunders meanwhile thought some slow bowling might curb the onslaught but his first over saw him carted for 18 and he quickly removed himself from proceedings for the greater good of the team. Seam was the clearly the order of the day and the recently returned from injury Prath Khatavkar was brought on to mix things up, snaring two valuable wickets including that of the set batsman , with Nadeem Arif’s three over spell at the end of the innings seeing him grab a couple of scalps too.
Pinner had somehow managed to flay their way to 200-8 , the same fielding deficiencies as highlighted in previous weeks not offering much by way of support to a hardworking bowling unit.
Saints opening pair of Ashish Dean and Manny Nisar took to the field after tea and it wasn’t long before Manny was trudging disconsolately back to the boundary after chasing a wide one and nicking off. There then followed a fairly depressing revolving door of Saints batsmen who went out full of conviction but were quickly back on the sidelines, most having registered paltry single figure scores.
Among this carnage one Saints batsman refused to yield; Ash Dean simply decided he wasn’t going to get out and played his way to a hugely impressive

century full of great shots and excellent running. It’s such a shame that none of the other batsmen could rise to the occasion and support him as he reached his sixth century for the club before departing late in the game, exhausted, on 103.
As the 40 overs came to an end Saints found themselves 8 wickets down and 38 runs short of the Pinner total. There were some positives: the bowling was on the whole decent , Ash showed us all that batting long was possible , we batted out the overs as a team and came away with some batting and bowling points.......but with another 30 points going begging as we enter the second half of the league season next weekend’s match against Offsley & Stopsley assumes real significance.
