Match report At the best of times Verulam School playing fields on Sandpit Lane is an exposed venue but, on a day when wind speeds were gusting up to 50mph, it felt somewhat like the Arctic tundra with plastic chairs cartwheeling across the playing area and more time spent replacing the bails than actually playing cricket.

In these trying conditions skipper Andy Saunders won the toss and opted to bowl on a drying pitch.

Saud Fattah and the prodigal Jim Everdell opened the bowling with hostility and set the tone for what was an excellent team performance in the field . In no time at all they had smashed through the first 4 batsman and reduced Watford Town to a dismal looking 4-11 before a middle order recovery of sorts steadied the ship for the opposition.

Andy Saunders and Tim Winfield came on first change and it was Saunders who struck first breaking a dangerous looking partnership, with Winfield claiming a wicket shortly after . A brutal cameo of 28 from Owais was brought to a halt by Jack Ypey and the tail was then cleaned up in no time at all , the opposition restricted to 99 with Fattah finishing on his best club figures to date of 4-18. A mention to for Marcus Cunnington behind the stumps who coped well with the conditions .

With just 100 the target to win Manny Nisar and Jack Ypey were sent out to open. Ypey soon returned following an unwise attempt to loft the ball over the infield and there then proceeded a worrying pattern of poor decisions which saw several batsmen returning sheepishly to the pavilion leaving St Albans on a precarious looking 50-5.

When Manny had a rush of blood and played an unwise shot to fall on a very well-constructed 40 and Jim Everdell missed a straight one things were looking very concerning but 3 boundaries in an over from the incoming Umar Muhktar calmed the nerves and the game was won on a slightly anti-climatic bye.

This was another very good win in what has been up to now an impressive season to keep the 4s in third place in the league and still with an outside chance of promotion.
